Has your club jumped onto the CANtastic Sculptures bandwagon? If not, here’s why you should; it’s fun!, it will fill the shelves of your local food bank to overflowing!, it’s fun!, gets your creative juices flowing!, it’s fun, gets all your towns people and schools and organizations involved!, it’s fun!, it’s great publicity for your club and for Lions!, it’s fun! Be prepared to have fun at our May 1 Spring Fling at Arrowhead Park where the pictures of the CAN sculptures will be judged. Thanks to PDG Dean and Region Chair Mary Porter for finding and organizing this project, and for fielding all your questions. Mary has emailed club Presidents and Secretaries with all the details, so if you haven’t heard about the CANtastic Sculptures, ask them first.
Club Officer elections for 2010-2011 are to be held in March. It’s a huge job for LCI to update their data base for all the clubs around the world each year, so Club Secretaries, please submit your PU 101 to LCI immediately after your elections. To build leadership within your club and District 9SW, LCI recommends you elect different officers, especially Presidents, every 1 or 2 years. Your outgoing officers can then step up to Zone or district level activities, and your new officers will find it a very growing personal experience. I learned so much during my year as Neola Lions Club President. Scholarships are available to the first five 9SW Lions that apply to Great Plains Lions Leadership Institute. Meals, lodging, and tuition are provided. You just pay for your transportation to Buena Vista University, Storm Lake IA, July 16-18, 2010. Let me know if you, or you and your spouse, want to claim one or two of those scholarships. State Committee Position openings: Besides several state-wide openings, there are 2 that can be filled only by 9SW Lions. Thanks to PDG Dale Shenefelt (9SW Rules Committee-3 years) and PCC Dr Eric Hollen (9SW Constitution and By-Laws) for their service. Their terms have expired and we need dedicated 9SW Lions to volunteer to SERVE in those positions. See the article in the general interest pages. Send your nominations of 9SW Lions for the State Bud Klise Leadership and Ralph Whitten Service Awards to me. A Penny a Day is the Way!

Mid-Winter Leadership Conference was fun and informative. Two SW Lions received Presidential Award Certificates from International President Eberhard Wirfs, presented by 2nd VP Tam. Charlie Cross, Carlisle Lions Club, and Diana Benzing, Neola Lions Club, are both to very hard working and well deserving of this award. Thanks for being Lions. The Partners in Service basket auction was a huge success! Thanks to all who gave my partner, Barb, donations for baskets. The auction raised over $2600 and was donated to Iowa Lions Foundation and the many projects it supports.
Meet your 2nd Vice District Governor Charles Binau Jr. Charlie joined the Shenandoah Lions Club in March, 2008, as a result of a district membership drive for the Shenandoah club. The drive targeted business and community leaders and we found Charlie at the Hy-Vee where he is an Assistant Manager. He quickly became a very active and enthusiastic Lion and has helped the club grow both in membership and in SERVICE. He became Club President in July, 2009. He and 3 other Shenandoah Lions attended the Great Plains Lion Leadership Institute at Storm Lake in July. He has attended our 9SW Cabinet Meetings and our District Convention, and is a certified KidSight vision screener. Charlie’s friendship with Bob Holmes, owner of Mount Arbor Nursery, led to a great new fund raising opportunity for every club in the District this year. Selling Burning Bushes netted several clubs hundreds and even thousands of dollars. In July 2010, he will serve as Region 5, Zone 2 Chairperson and as your 2nd Vice District Governor. Charlie writes, “As 2nd VDG elect I would first like to thank all those that voted for me. I would ask that all clubs in 9SW please call me at (712) 215-0315 or email me at chuckibr@msn.com as to when your meetings are, so I might have a chance to make your meeting. If you are looking for fund-raisers, I would be glad to help with some ideas.” Congratulations Charlie!
Peace Poster Contest-We had 8 clubs, 8 schools, and 266 students participate this year. A big Thank You to everyone who helped make this a successful event in District 9SW. The judging was done in the prescribed manner by Penny Christensen, poet and artist, and a member of the Neola Lions Club. I want to thank all the participants for the thought and effort they put into creating their posters. I’m sure “PEACE” was a big topic of discussion for a few weeks at each of their schools. Congratulations to our winner, Megan Koch age 13, a 7th grader at Adel-Desota-Minburn School District, and her sponsor, the Adel Lions Club.
The Indianola Noon Lions Club 80th Anniversary celebration showed they have much to be proud of. They sponsored both the Indianola Breakfast and the Indianola Evening Clubs, and others. They also presented several Melvin Jones Fellowships and Warren Coleman Awards. They are very active and still growing! Congratulations! 9SW membership is 10 less than this time last year. My goal is for each club to have a positive membership growth of at least 2 by June 30. Will each member and each club make a special effort to achieve this goal? The need for a Lions Club in your community will outlive me and you. Make sure you have the next generation of Lions in place to fill your shoes.

Cooperation | Clubs on the Move
Thanks to all the clubs who have scheduled my official visit. We’ve been having fun and have visited many clubs that are doing outstanding SERVICE in their communities. It makes me proud to be a LION! Please contact me ASAP if we haven’t scheduled our visit to your club yet.
We’ve had a wonderful Christmas season. In spite of our record snowfall in SW Iowa we’ve managed not to miss any of our Church, family, or Lion activities. I hope your Holiday Season has been wonderful as well.
New Year’s Day marks a new beginning. It’s a time to review and to set new personal and club goals for the year ahead. My goal for each of us in 9SW is to do one thing in Lionism we’ve never done before. That could be to volunteer for a Club, District, or State office, or attend a Zone meeting, Cabinet meeting, seminar, or Convention. It could be as easy as helping with more of your clubs’ projects, or even just reading your Lion and Iowa Lion magazines.
My goal for Lions Clubs in 9SW is for each club to have a net membership increase of at least 2 by June 30, 2010, to provide at least 1 new SERVICE this year, and to make at least 1 new donation.
New Year’s Day also marks the midpoint of my year as your District Governor. Boy! Has it been going fast! We have lots to accomplish yet. I’ll be grateful for your continued support.
9SW District Fundraiser As we travel around the District, we are selling raffle tickets for a 12” X 24” matted and framed picture (see below), which was the inspiration for my personal pin. It states-“Leave a shadow of your life that means something…not just anything”. When I first saw this piece of art, I knew right away it was what I wanted for my motto for my year as Governor. This speaks to what Lionism is all about—Leave a shadow of your life…thru SERVICE.

A Volunteer’s Prayer Barb and I attended the funeral of PDG Larry Vorse, a long time member of the Council Bluffs Lions Club. Larry was the Guiding Lion for my home club, the Neola Lions Club, 33 years ago. This prayer was a part of the service:
Thank Thee, Lord, as A Volunteer For the chance to serve again this year. To give of myself in some small way, To those not as blessed as I each day. My thanks for health of mind and soul, To aid me ever toward my goal; For eyes to see the good in all, A hand to extend before a fall. For legs to go where the need is great; Learning to love—forgetting to hate. For ears to hear and heart to care, When someone’s cross is hard to bear. A smile to show my affection true, With energy plenty, the task I do. And all I ask, Dear Lord, if I may, Is to serve You better, day by day.

When Governor Chet Culver appointed Clarinda Lion Richard H. Davidson to the bench in the 4th Judicial District, he helped to continue a tradition of Davidsons who are lawyers, judges and Lions. Richard H. Davidson follows his grandfather Harold E. Davidson who was a district court judge from 1943 -1966. Richard followed in his father’s footsteps as not only an attorney, but also as Lion. His dad is a 54 year member of the Clarinda club, while Richard has been a member since 1991. The 4th Judicial District includes 9 counties in southwest Iowa. Judge Davidson will start his duties on December 1. Congratulations, Lion/Judge Davidson!
