July News

Club Activities | Dates to Remember

Let’s start off the new year by thanking and congratulating Jerry and Barb Farley for their great year of service in 2009-2010. They have truly “left a shadow of their life through service.” We appreciate you Jerry and Barb! Great job!

I am proud to serve as your 2010-11 9SW District Governor. My husband and partner in service, Lion Ken, live in Adair. Ken has worked at a southwest Iowa John Deere dealership for 44 years, and I’ve been in the banking/accounting/insurance business my entire life. We are both still working. We are here to work for you and your club…not above you, not below you, but BESIDE YOU. Please contact me to schedule club visits, schedule special presentations, or attendance at other events. Secretaries, please email or mail me your MMR’s and your monthly club activities reports.

The new International President Sid Scruggs III’s theme for 2010-11 is “Beacon of Hope”. Sid’s theme includes the photo of the Cape Hatarask lighthouse. “When the raging storms of life rush in, bringing darkness, when the dream fades and despair takes its place, then like a faithful lighthouse on the distant shore, a Lion stands as a ray of light to show the way.” Sid challenges each of us to find the light within ourselves, and be a beacon of hope and service. “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” President Scruggs wants each club to have a “signature” service project.

The “Beacon of Hope” service campaigns for 2010-11 will include four themed campaigns:

August – Engaging our Youth
October – Vision projects
Dec/Jan – Relieving Hunger
April – Environmental.

Club secretaries will use the newly redesigned Service Activities Report to report their club’s activities, especially those related to the four international service action campaigns. Clubs that submit those four specific projects online will be automatically nominated for International Beacon of Hope Awards. Be sure to send DG Ardie Klemish a copy of that online submission, and your club will be in competition for the 9SW District Beacon of Hope Award as well at the end of the year.

President Scrugg’s acronym for LIONS is “Loving Individuals Offering Needed Service”. That truly reflects what each of Lion does in their own town, district, state, and world. It’s no wonder that Lions Clubs International is ranked as the #1 non-governmental organization in the world, and that former U.S. President Jimmy Carter nominated Lions Clubs International to receive the Nobel Peace Prize two years ago!

I have challenged each 9SW club to have a net gain in members in 2010-11. Each club has signed a “pledge” to help bring more “lights” (members) to serve as Beacons of Hope, like the lighthouse is a beacon of hope to ships nearing the rocky shores. Each new zone chair contacted their clubs in April to get that pledge. We CAN achieve that goal by asking a parent, child, sibling, friend, neighbor, school teacher, fellow church member, or business professional in our town to join in our efforts to help those in need. Bring in an entire family as new members!

My personal theme is LET’S R-O-A-R! My pin features a cheerleading megaphone. Because of my enthusiasm, I’ve been known as the cheerleader for Lionism in our district, in Iowa, and beyond for many years. ROAR not only is the loud sound that Lions make, but ROAR stands for Recruitment, Orientation, Activation, and Retention. If EVERY 9SW Lion recruits new members, helps to get them oriented, and gets them active in their club and beyond, we will not have a retention problem. So, 9SW Lions, LET’S ROAR! By ROARING together, we will be Beacons of Hope, and a bright light to those in need around the world.

9SW District Convention will be Nov.12-13 at the Congregational Church in Stuart, Iowa. A block of rooms has been reserved at AmericInn in Stuart, phone 515-523-9000. International Director Ron and June Johnson from Maine will be our guest speaker. The convention will include a special tribute to veterans. The 9SW 2010-11 district pin includes a tribute to veterans as well, and features “The Freedom Rock” in Adair County, right in the center of District 9SW.
